Some Location Facts

A quick dose of history...

Manchester is centrally located in New England – making it a convenient home base for exploring the region. Take note of proximity to:

  • Boston – about an hour drive (50 miles south of Manchester)
  • The White Mountains – also about an hour drive from Manchester
  • New Hampshire and Maine coastlines / beaches – 30-45 miles
  • Concord, NH (capital city) – 18 miles to the north
  • Portland, ME – 80 miles to the east

With a population of about 120,000, Manchester is the largest city in the state and the largest city in northern New England – as such, having access to a couple of airports makes travel here and there easy!

Your Manchester Real Estate Guide enjoys the history of the area, here’s a quick lesson: founded in 1751 as a small town on the banks of the Merrimack River the settlement was named after Manchester, England and was originally part of the town of Derryfield. Manchester became a major industrial center in the 19th century, thanks in part to its location on the Merrimack River, and became home to one the largest textile mills in the world – Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. Growing pains of the industrial revolution, labor unions/strikes, and manufacturing changes all encompassed the evolution of this warm, welcoming, innovative and culturally infused city of today!

A couple of other fun facts – there is no state income tax or sales tax in New Hampshire! Ok, but property taxes are real and need consideration. Your Manchester Real Estate Guide can assist you in navigating all the details with property tax questions.
